A zombie ghost bride and groom, a falcon crafted from cans, a tin man and a witch are a few of the cast of characters that made an appearance during October outside Field Park Elementary School in Western Springs.
The parade of costumed characters were in a display dubbed “Crow Couture” and were made by students for the project sponsored by the Field Park Parent-Teacher Organization. The display was intended to help students see how fashion can be art and how act can be created with reused materials.
A group of parent-volunteers who sponsor an art appreciation program led the project.
“We visit classrooms once a month and teach about the history of art, or a particular artist. It’s supplemental to their art classes,” said Jennifer Watland-Bourgeois, a member of the PTO.

The children were challenged to create characters with found materials including cans, newspapers and even signs that had advertised a 5K at the school.
Students in fifth grade chose to make a sports fan out of cans. The had a bit of fun by attaching a photo of principal Brad Promisel to make the fan’s face.
“They put his face on a paint can and made a cape for it,” Watland-Bourgeois said.
In keeping with the sports theme, they also made a falcon of cans and named it “Falco,” which is the name of their school’s mascot.
Watland-Bourgeois was impressed with the students’ hard work.
“They collected materials on their own,” she said.
They also showed creativity and worked together well.
“We were proud of the way they owned the project,” she said.
