Hefeweizen, southern German wheat beer, has been brewed at Munich’s Hofbrauhaus since 1602 — and right now at Hofbrauhaus Chicago.
The Hefeweizen at Hofbrauhaus Chicago isn’t just German “style” beer; it’s actually German beer. “Everything — equipment, malt, hops, yeast, wheat — everything comes from Germany, except the water and me,” boasts brewmaster Rob Hunter.
Samples of Rosemont-brewed Hefeweizen are sent to Munich for testing every month, ensuring that this beer tastes the same as what they’ve brewed in Bavaria for centuries.
With minimal hop bitterness and moderate alcohol, Hefeweizen is nuanced, with hints of banana, clove and vanilla. “It is very aromatic,” explains Hunter.
A traditional pairing with Hefeweizen ($7.50 for a half liter) is Weisswurst ($14.99), white sausages of veal and pork, served in a bowl of warm water. Sweet mustard balances the savory sausages, and lemon peel in the sausage complements the beer’s characteristic fruitiness. Wunderbar.
