player ready...Soup and salad chain Sweet Tomatoes closed all its Illinois restaurants this week after its parent company filed for bankruptcy Monday.
Locations in Glenview, Waukegan, Schaumburg, Lombard, Aurora and St. Charles all shuttered abruptly. In all, the parent company, Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., plans to close between 20 and 30 “underperforming” stores and expects to sell itself.
San Diego-based Garden Fresh, which also operates the chain Souplantation, is maintaining between 70 and 80 restaurants across some western and southern states, concentrated in California and Florida.
In its Chapter 11 filing, Garden Fresh listed between $100 million and $500 million in assets, and the same range of debt. Its biggest creditors are a produce supplier, insurance company and marketing firm.
Garden Fresh expects to emerge from bankruptcy protection by Dec. 5, the company said in a news release.
A company spokesman was not immediately available to comment.
