As he admired the beauty of Scoville Park, Jeffrey Brown, 48, of Chicago took a few minutes to talk with the Oak Leaves on Sept. 14.
Q: What brings you out here today?
A: First of all, it’s just the whole atmosphere. The Peace Triumphant memorial, the way it’s been restored. I think the veterans should always be remembered. I love the benches. This is just a wonderful, quiet place to come and pray and read the Bible. It’s so peaceful, looking at the tennis courts, the playground, the open space. I think this is one of Oak Park’s precious gems. I think it’s good for the community. For me, it’s a good reminder of scripture: “Heavens declare the glory of God.” It makes you feel good to be alive. I’m enjoying the restaurants, the sights and the sounds, the great views and the trees. This is part of what I like to see when I come out here. To me, it’s just wonderful. That’s what I love about Oak Park: its parks are wonderful.
Q: Wow. You should do commercials for the Park District of Oak Park, or the village.
A: [laughed] I always like to say wonderful things about a wonderful place. I really enjoy Oak Park, and I want to see the community preserved. To me, this is what I would call a masterpiece. I love to come here to get away from the city.

Q: Words you live by?
A: “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” I’ve really leaned on that the past year.
