On Monday, the Munster Town Council established a fund to accept the Community Crossings Grant. The grant requires an equal funding match from the town, which will be taken from the town’s local income tax fund.
“This is a great win for the town of Munster,” Town Manager Dustin Anderson said. “This is essentially free money.”
The funds are earmarked for the following projects:
*Crack sealing along Southwood Drive and Fran-Lin Parkway
*Mill and overlay work on Fran-Lin from Southwood to Calumet Avenue, and both sections of White Oak Avenue
*Handicapped accessible crossing upgrades along the project routes
Fran-Lin, Southwood, Calumet and White Oak are planned as detour routes for the 45th Street underpass project.
Another project, involving relocation of a large sanitary manhole at Schreiber Drive and Manor Drive obstructing replacement of a BP oil pipeline, carries a cost of $229,750. Apparently, Munster is encroaching on BP’s utility easement, officials said, but under an agreement worked out with BP the town is responsible for only $29,375 of the cost.
