Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I tried to hate a beer that sounded like a Starbucks drink. I really did!

But Saugatuck Brewing’s Pumpkin Chai is a smart balance between its two halves: herbal and lightly spicy, with just a touch of milky sweetness. It — gasp — gives pumpkin beer a good name.

Which is odd timing.

Long the mosquito on craft beer’s arm, pumpkin beer has traditionally arrived too early (August), stayed too late (the following spring) and mostly tasted terrible (too many to name).

But a funny thing has happened to beer’s most polarizing style. While its star has fallen enough that Forbes magazine reported that production has been cut “drastically” in 2016, its quality has quietly improved.

Though the style is still mostly a speed bump on the way to winter’s stouts and barleywines, breweries have become more creative with their pumpkin beer offerings, moving beyond the sticky, cloying spice bombs that have plagued the category for years. There are even a handful of pumpkin beers that a pumpkin beer cynic (guilty!) can endorse as worth drinking.

I tasted close to 25 pumpkin beers in recent weeks, and came up with a list of winners that should continue to be available through October. For the list (ranked from least to best), see the photo gallery above.
