The Griffith Police Department is investigating a burglary that occurred early Wednesday morning at Blythe’s Sporting Goods.

Griffith Police Commander Keith Martin said Wednesday the department responded to an alarm a little before 5 a.m. at the gun and safe store at 138 N. Broad St. Responding officers arrived to find the store’s rear glass door smashed and evidence that people had been inside.

“Several of the glass display counters and wall displays in the back had firearms missing from them,” Martin said. “We’re waiting for the official count from Blythe’s to determine the merchandise’s value.”

Surveillnance video obtained by police from the store showed several people were involved and that they ran westbound out of the door in which they came, Martin said. Their descriptions are being withheld at this time pending the investigation.

Calls to Blythe’s and Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms weren’t returned Wednesday.

Martin said if the merchandise is recovered, the store will get it back based on serial numbers it provides to police, as all of that information is kept by the retailer, Martin said. Anyone with information can contact Griffith Detective John Mowery at 219-924-7503 or the anonymous tip line at 219-922-3085.
