
The back of his wheelchair parked against the brick Main Street viaduct, William Trybus is sporting a snazzy Chicago Bears cap these days. The price? He bartered “a cup of coffee” for it. Some might say Trybus, 64, a resident of Albany Care, paid too much, given the Bears’ performances over their start to the 2016 season , but he’s eternally optimistic.
Q: What are your early roots?
A: I was born in Chicago. I got hit by two cars – when I was 5, and when I was 12.
Q: In the second accident?
A: I was walking on Milwaukee Avenue. The car hit me and dragged me 75 feet. Then I was taken to Lutheran General and they saved my life.
Q: What kind of work did you do?
A: At a Shell gas station, pumping gas.
Q: Tell me about your parents.
A: Edward, Bessie. He worked on pianos, organs – and televisions. He was a handyman.
Q: And your mother?
A: Same thing, side by side.
Q: Sports interests?
A: I’m a Chicago fan. Go Cubs, all the way. The Blackhawks can do it, the Chicago Cubs can do it. Maybe the Sox next year.
Q: Favorite Cubs players from the past?
A. Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Don Kessinger, Billy Williams.
Q. How will you celebrate if the Cubs go all the way?
