Carol’s Pub, the self-dubbed “Last of the Honky-Tonks in Chicago,” will “remain closed until further notice,” according to its Facebook page. The bar’s liquor license has been revoked, according to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

Carol’s (4659 N. Clark St.), which has a history of federal tax liens, had one filed against it earlier this year for $8,315, Cook County property records show. (The IRS defines a tax lien as “the government’s legal claim against your property when you neglect or fail to pay a tax debt.”)

The telephone for Carol’s Pub has been disconnected; attempts Monday to reach the owner were unsuccessful. The 43-year-old Uptown bar was a favorite among many Chicagoans for its country music, reasonably priced drinks and always-entertaining dance floor.

“We want to know what happened. Just like everyone else,” said Tressa Feher, chief of staff to 46th Ward Ald. James Cappleman. She said the office is looking into what happened.

No one, Feher added, has approached the alderman’s office regarding possible future uses for the Carol’s space. The property, at the corner of Leland Avenue and Clark Street in the Sheridan Park neighborhood, is within a moratorium area for new businesses offering on-site consumption of alcohol and a second moratorium area banning alcohol sales by new businesses. Appeals would have to be made to the alderman’s office, she said.

“We want to make sure the community is involved,” Feher said.
