Two defending state champions visited Fenwick’s new home at Triton College in the season’s first four weeks, and both left with defeats.

The best of 2015’s best was up next, and Loyola showed why it’s still ranked No. 1.

The defending Class 8A champion Ramblers showed off their vast offensive arsenal on Friday night, moving the ball every which way and scoring on the first six possessions of their 52-21 victory over No. 12 Fenwick on Friday night in River Grove.

Quarterback Tommy Herion (19-for-21 passing, 258 yards), tight end/Wildcat QB Jake Marwede, running back Kyle Rock and receivers David Terrell Jr. and Jack Martinus all had big games as Loyola (5-0) played its best all-around game of the season to win its 22nd in a row.

“Fenwick is a real good team,” said Herion, who threw touchdown passes to Marwede and Martinus in his best game as the Ramblers’ starting QB.

“Sticking to the game plan, letting everyone else just do their job. Everyone makes each other look good. The offensive line was ridiculous again. They have been the centerpiece of the offense all year.”

An inexperienced secondary may have robbed the Ramblers of their air of invincibility early in the season. Fenwick quarterback Jake Keller got one over the top of it early to give the Friars (4-1) a quick 7-0 lead.

But Ryan Lin-Peistrup responded with two first-half interceptions for the Ramblers, and Loyola’s skill players took turns showcasing their talents as the Ramblers offensive line dominated and everything Herion dialed up worked.

They topped 50 points for the second straight week and are averaging 44.4 points per game.

“Our offensive continues to amaze me,” Loyola coach John Holecek said. “If you can’t stop the run with your front seven, it’s going to be tough.”
