Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith participated in practice on the first day of training camp’s Red vs. White scrimmage Friday.
Keith did not play in the World Cup of Hockey to continue rehab on his right knee. The two-time Norris Trophy winner had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in October, and though he played after that, he determined he wasn’t ready for the World Cup.
“Well, today was the first skate,” he said. “I’ve been skating a little here this month, just trying to get going, trying to take it one day at a time.”
Keith didn’t say if he would be ready for the season opener Oct. 12 at home against the Blues.
“I don’t want to look too far ahead, but I like the progression,” he said. “Today was good to get back in the swing of things, even though it was a short practice.”
Although his knee is progressing, the defenseman said he regrets he couldn’t play in the World Cup.
“It was disappointing, especially when we had a long offseason this year,” he said.
Fellow Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook said he was glad to see Keith take the ice.

“Yeah, that guy is amazing,” Seabrook said. “Looks like he hasn’t missed a step. But that’s Dunc for you.”
Blackhawks assistant coach Mike Kitchen, filling in at training camp as Joel Quenneville works as an assistant coach for Team Canada in the World Cup, seemed optimistic Keith would be ready to go for the opener.
“I think he’ll be fine for that,” Kitchen said. “That’s why we’re just kind of going to be bringing him along slowly. He should be there.”
Keith was ruled out for Saturday’s scrimmage at the Blackhawks’ annual training camp festival at the United Center.
Red vs. White: The White team defeated the Red team 4-1 in the first scrimmage of camp.
Brian Campbell, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Richard Panik, Michal Rozsival and Scott Darling represented the winning team.
Seabrook (defenseman) and Andrew Desjardins (forward) wore red.
Prospect camp standout 19-year-old Alexandre Fortin scored twice for the White, and Desjardins scored the lone goal for Red.
