While the Cubs are “embracing the target,” as manager Joe Maddon put it, fans are embracing their TVs.

Not literally, of course, though clinching the NL Central Division with 16 games left in the regular season is bound to cause extreme, Homer Simpson-esque emotional reactions.

All the hype surrounding the team’s playoff push helped Comcast SportsNet Chicago to a ratings record for a Cubs broadcast on the network. CSN recorded an 11.19 Chicago market household rating Thursday, according to Nielsen Media Research, which crushed the network’s previous record for a Cubs game (8.30 on July 28, 2008, vs. Milwaukee).

Almost 389,000 Chicago TV homes watched the entire Cubs-Brewers game Thursday, with more than 465,600 tuning in late in the contest. It also was the most-watched regular-season game of any kind in CSN’s history.

Even though the Cubs fell 5-4, they clinched the division title when St. Louis lost at San Francisco later in the evening.
