Several law enforcement agencies searched into the afternoon for a man who robbed a Winfield bank late Saturday morning, police said.

Lake County Sheriff’s Police Deputy Chief Dan Murchek said the department received a call at 11:45 a.m. that a man came into the First Midwest Bank, 10858 Pike St., and demanded cash. He then fled north on Pike Street with an undetermined amount of money in a light-colored Buick Century.

Murchek said it’s not known at this time whether the man displayed a weapon, nor if he was working with anyone.

Witnesses said the man was black, about 6-feet tall and wearing a gray athletic suit with a black stripe running down it, Murchek said.

Lake County Sheriff’s officers, along with the Winfield Town Marshall, were the first to respond to the scene, Murchek said. The Sheriff’s aerial and K-9 units, as well as Crown Point, Merrillville and Hobart Police officers, joined in the afternoon search.

Officers were also continuing with witness interviews Saturday, Murchek said.
