The town has invested heavily in digital technologies to run day-to-day operations, but with that comes the cost of maintaining computers, tablets, databases and mobile phones.

In response to the town’s growing technological needs, the Munster Town Council created a new position — Assistant Technology Specialist — at Tuesday’s meeting.

Pay will be based on the candidate’s experience, as the position carries a minimum $43,600 annual salary. The addition of a third position to the Information Technology Department, currently staffed by the Information Technical Specialist and Data Processing Specialist, is expected to reduce significant overtime hours.

According to Town Manager Dustin Anderson, town employees use 170 desktop computers, 40 printers/copiers, 15 servers and 52 software programs, which IT Specialist Lance Reinsma maintains. Additional duties include management of the Munster community fiber optic network, security surveillance cameras on town properties and emergency communications technology.

The primary role of the Assistant Technology Specialist would be to handle the daily technology needs of town employees, allowing Reinsma to focus more on larger technology projects. Reinsma has served in his current role since 1989.

The town will advertise the new position on its website, munster.org. In addition, the Public Works Department is hiring Maintainer positions in the Street and Water/Sewer divisions.

In other action, the council voted on first reading for a two-level upgrade for Patricia Abbott from Accounting Supervisor to Controller, a new title and pay grade commensurate with the duties she performs, said Clerk-Treasurer Dave Shafer. A second reading vote is scheduled for the council’s Sept. 19 meeting.
