Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

New York is a city of slices, a place where pizza often must be grabbed on the go. Here in Chicago, the pace is a bit slower — some might say saner. The talk here is about deep dish versus thin, not about slices. But they’re out there if you look for them.

I did.

Slices, which are pre-baked and just need a couple of minutes in an oven to reheat, don’t require the same investment of time, money and commitment that a whole pie does, although some of the slices out there are so big they rival small pizzas in size. Ordering a couple of slices also can be an easy way to check out what a new-to-you pizza joint has to offer.

Drawbacks? There are a few. Nothing beats a freshly made, just-baked pizza in terms of flavor and texture. A round or square pie can look more handsome than a rectangular or triangular slice (though there are some pretty ones out there). Your topping options are often limited to the usual suspects: cheese, pepperoni and sausage. That can be killer on one’s stomach (and one’s roundup story), but take heart — there are a number of nonmeat options out there.

We offer 10 Chicago-area spots (listed alphabetically) putting speed, savoriness and some Big Apple sass into slices. One tip: Call ahead if you just gotta have a certain slice; specials change, or a certain topping might not be available when you walk in.
