This White Sox season can’t be an easy one for Hawk Harrelson, even though he has been behind the microphone for only about half of the games.

On Thursday night, as the Sox were getting beaten by the Twins — a team that had lost its previous 13 games — Harrelson decided it was a good time to compare the seasons of Sox third baseman Todd Frazier and his counterpart on the Cubs, Kris Bryant.

“Kris Bryant, in the running for MVP, will probably get a leg up on most guys there (in the National League),” Harrelson said. “He’s got 36 home runs and 91 RBIs. And he’s a good third baseman, but you know, he’s not Todd Frazier defensively.”

Was Hawk suggesting that Frazier deserved consideration for the American League MVP award? Earlier in the loss to the Twins, Frazier had hit his 34th home run of the season. And there’s usually a lot of dead airtime when Hawk calls the game, so even a half-baked thought conceivably could be an improvement on silence.

“We talk about batting average being one of the most misleading statistics in baseball,” Harrelson said, pointing out of the most obvious differences between the players; Bryant has raised his average over .300, while Frazier has been in the low .200s most of the season.

“Bryant’s in the running for that MVP,” Harrelson said. “He’s got two more home runs than Todd. He’s got seven more RBIs, but he’s hitting 95 points higher. So, batting averages can be really skewed. As I said, with the way Todd shows his leather at third.”

Ooohhhh-kay. It’s true that Frazier’s defensive numbers at third base are better than Bryant’s. In 89 games at third, Bryant has made 11 errors. He has a fielding percentage of .947 and a range factor of 2.21, according to baseball-reference.com. Frazier has made only 8 errors in 129 games at third, with a fielding percentage of .975 and a range factor of 2.54.

As for the offensive numbers, well … we understand Hawk probably doesn’t have much use for these new-fangled saber-toothed metrics, but Bryant’s slash line of .307/.403/.590 dwarfs Frazier’s .215/.296/.456. The OPS difference — .993 to .752 – is immense. And while the homers and RBIs are fairly close, as Hawk pointed out, Bryant has more than twice as many doubles (32 to 14), has scored 42 more runs (112 to 70) and has 51 more hits (154 to 103). Surprisingly, Hawk didn’t mention that Frazier has more stolen bases (10 to Bryant’s 8).

Frazier has unquestionably been an upgrade at third base for the Sox, a position that was manned by the likes of Conor Gillaspie, Gordon Beckham and Mike Olt in 2015. But, to use one of Hawk’s favorite terms, the comparison with Bryant was a strrrrettttch.
