In a game that came down to the final play, New Trier had just enough as the Trevians gutted out a 14-10 road win against York in Elmhurst.
Trevians senior defensive back Ryan Siverston hit Dukes junior quarterback Charles Pakenas just as he was about to release the ball on a Hail Mary attempt late in the fourth quarter. The throw fell harmlessly near the sideline and preserved the win for the Trevians.
“Tonight was a big wake-up call,” Trevians coach Brian Doll said. “But credit to the kids out there. They really worked at it and never gave up.”
Senior running back Francis Fay scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter.
Fay, who had 138 yards of total offense for the Trevians (1-0), was also a major presence as a defensive back. He made several key tackles and kept the Dukes from threatening in the second half.
“He is fearless,” Doll said of Fay. “I can’t say enough about him and the contributions he made for us tonight. He really came up big.”
Senior running back Keith Freeman had 86 yards rushing on 17 carries for York (0-1).
