Two firefighters were taken to a local hospital with “cuts to their hands” after battling a house fire Thursday morning in Homewood, according to Mayor Rich Hofeld.

The occupants of the home in the 2400 block of Spruce Road got out safely after being alerted by a smoke detector, Hofeld said. But the fire caused extensive damage inside the home, he said.

Hofeld said the occupants heard a static-like sound right before the detector went off. The fire department was alerted to the fire about 10:30 a.m.

Hofeld said the injuries to the firefighters were not serious. They were taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, a Homewood Fire Department employee said.
