RIO DE JANEIRO – Led by Chicago native Kent Farrington, the U.S. equestrian team is in a four-way tie for first heading into Wednesday’s show jumping final.
Farrington, a Latin School graduate who grew up in Lincoln Park, opened the competition for the United States with a clean ride on Voyeur, his 14-year-old gelding. Teammates McLain Ward and Lucy Davis followed with errorless turns, putting the Americans on par with mistake-free teams from the Netherlands, Germany and Brazil.
“It is never easy to be the lead-off rider,” Farrington said. “But it helps the others to put in a clear round. That was my duty. Mission accomplished.”
Currently ranked No. 4 in the world, Farrington remains in the hunt for an individual medal, as well. He’s one of only 11 riders without a mistake after the first two rounds of the competition.
The team event concludes Wednesday, with the individual finals scheduled for Friday at the Olympic Equestrian Center in Deodoro.
