
Streetwise vendor Marie Tarallo was on top of the news this week, selling papers with a cover photo of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in the Rio Olympics. The week before, the edition carried the Olympic schedule “and who’s in it,” said Tarallo, 54, an Evanston native. She was selling the papers from a spot at Clark Street and Sherman Avenue.

A. It’s slow. [I’m] only [selling at] lunchtime.
Q. What did you do before?
A. I used to do law clerking. I’m trying to get back into it again. It’s pretty high pressure though. Attorneys tend to like to rush. They’re always in a hurry.
Q. How does Evanston compare with Chicago as a Streetwise market?
A. Evanstonians seem to be more generous than Chicagoans. When I’m selling Streetwise, I sell more here than in Chicago.
Q. Having students must help?
A. When the students and professors are back … but students tend not to carry money.
Q. Hobbies?
A. I like different languages, like Esperanto, like Klingon.
Q. Klingon, like in Star Trek?
A. I don’t really speak it. I just read about it.
Q. Favorite restaurants?
A. I like Einstein Bagels. They have good bagel sandwiches. I also like Burger King, Taco Bell, the Golden Olympic – a friend of my family works there.
