On Sunday, Aug. 14, thousands of Chicago students will receive free school supplies from the Julian D. King Foundation, established by singer and actress Jennifer Hudson and her sister Julia Hudson.

The foundation was established in 2008 after the murder of Hudson’s nephew Julian, who was 7 at the time, Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson. Every year on Julian’s birthday, the organization gives school supplies to underprivileged children in Chicago.

“Julian loved going to school and learning,” the organization said in a press release. “Jennifer and Julia want to help other kids through his memory by making sure they have access to everything they need to have a successful school year.”

They’ve christened the event “Hatch Day.” Last year’s Hatch Day saw 8,000 children receive school supplies ahead of the new year.

“Where we come from, a lot of kids don’t have school supplies or school clothes,” Hudson, who was born and raised in Englewood, said in a statement. “Children should not have to worry about those things. We make sure these kids have school supplies and presents for the holidays.”

The event will take place at Kroc Center Chicago at 1250 E. 119th St. from 10 a.m. until supplies run out.
