At least one person was shot in the parking lot of the Hawthorne Race Course in west suburban Stickney on Sunday night, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. during an annual festival held at the parking lot of the horse racing track, at 3501 S. Laramie Ave., authorities said.

“A couple of people” were shot, but no other information was available, said Kevin Kozelka, a dispatcher with the Stickney Police Department. The victims’ conditions were not immediately known.

Jim Miller, a director of publicity with the race course, said an annual Belize cultural festival was held at the parking lot when a disturbance was reported. The event festival was stopped, and people were evacuated. The event, attended by thousands each year, was supposed to end at 10:30 p.m., Miller said.

The race course stopped its racing event as well but resumed it after about an hour, Miller said. No one was evacuated from the race course.
