Where are the mosquitoes in Rio?

Been here since early Tuesday and I have yet to see one. And we have not been hiding indoors or within the Olympic bubble.

Spent a day in a hilltop Favela, went to Copacabana beach, ran through a wooded area by a lagoon and walked miles through the Barre neighbhorhood. Not one skeeter.

Perhaps the officials here did a remarkably effective job of eradicating them in the city. Perhaps just lucky.

And even though it’s winter in Brazil, it’s still hot, upper 70s or low 80s. It has rained. So it’s mosquito weather.

One person on our reporting team who had dinner outdoors said she thinks she was bitten on the ankle. Another said he saw one three days ago on the bus from the airport. One photographer heard that a friend has possibly seen one.

We have not seen any at the Barra Olympic zone. There are no mosquites to be seen at the Olympics press center.

The most newsworthy reference to mosquitoes in the last few days was when fans heckled Hope Solo with chants of “Zika” at a U.S. women’s soccer game.

Of course not saying there aren’t mosquitoes in Rio, or that Zika isn’t still a real concern. Just that I have not yet seen one.

But rest assured will remain ever vigilant. And will keep my repellant nearby, just in case.
