Munster’s annual National Night Out Against Crime offered a festival atmosphere that ended with a spectacular fireworks display.

A magic show, bounce house, games, D.J., police K-9 demonstrations, women’s self-defense education and a Lake County Sheriff’s Department helicopter landing were among the many attractions that brought families Tuesday to the south end of Community Park and adjacent Munster Pool, where there was free swimming.

A variety of local businesses set up tables and booths to showcase their products and services while demonstrating their support for Munster’s police, fire and public works employees, who mingled with the crowd and answered questions about the work they do.

Munster resident Suzanne Regan had more than just her own kids in tow.

“We come for all the publicity booths for all the water bottles, candy, souvenirs and other things they give away,” she said. “This is where my kids can come out and see their friends before school starts.”

Night Out organizer, D.A.R.E./Crime Prevention Officer James Ghrist spent the evening moving making sure everyone was having a great time. He said the event gets bigger and better every year.

“I like meeting all the members of our community and see how our local businesses and community organizations interact with our visitors here today,” he said. “This year, we have more business supporting us, more volunteers and demonstrations than we’ve ever had.”

Last year’s night out celebration won the top award for Outstanding Participation in the National Night Out Against Crime from the National Association of Town Watch.

Munster Crime Watch captain Larry Velchek explained the event helps police officers engender goodwill with the community, and all the “vehicles and equipment on display give residents a better idea of where their tax dollars are going.”

“We truly have a great community spirit here,” Police Chief Steve Scheckel said. “It’s especially a great time for the kids.”
