On July 28, Paul O’Neal, 18, was fatally shot by Chicago police. The shooting is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority. More on the videos and incident here. Here’s what is known about the shooting:
What happened?
3:30 a.m.: Bolingbrook gas station
A gas station camera at Route 53 and Boughton Road in Bolingbrook captured three vehicles that were stolen overnight: a 2009 Buick Enclave, a 2003 Honda Odyssey and a 2010 Nissan Rogue. Also spotted was O’Neal, along with three others suspected in the thefts.

5:55 a.m.: Jaguar stolen
A 2002 Jaguar XKR convertible is reported stolen, and one of the other stolen cars seen at the gas station is recovered nearby.
7:30 p.m.: Police attempt to stop Jaguar in South Shore neighborhood
O’Neal, driving the Jaguar, drives north on Merrill Avenue. The Jaguar strikes a Chicago police SUV and a parked car just south of 74th after the officers attempted to stop the Jaguar. Two officers opened fire at O’Neal while he was still in the Jaguar, according to police sources.

O'Neal crashes into second police SUV
As O’Neal continues driving north, the car strikes another police SUV north of 74th and O’Neal flees from the car.

O'Neal is fatally shot while fleeing
O’Neal is shot once in the back, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was unarmed, police said. In videos released by IPRA, O’Neal is shown being handcuffed behind a house just north of both accidents.
A 17-year-old boy who was also in the car was taken into police custody.

9 p.m.: O'Neal dies at hospital
O’Neal is taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after 9 p.m.
What happened to the officers involved?
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has stripped the three officers of their police powers pending the outcome of an IPRA investigation, saying they violated unspecified department policies.
What is the status of the investigation?
The shooting is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority. Video from police dashboard cameras and body cameras were recovered, but video of the shooting itself was not captured on video. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the deparatment is investigating why the body camera worn by the officer who shot O’Neal did not record.
