The woman and her boyfriend argued outside her home about 4 a.m., and she was shot several times after the dispute turned violent, police said. In an advisory, police identified the suspect as Robert Donald and warned “extreme caution is advised” for any agency that makes contact with him.
Police said the victim was undergoing surgery Thursday, and her condition was not known.
Beverly Hodgkin, standing outside her home approximately 500 yards from the 1100 block of Williamsburg Road, where the woman was shot, said she heard gunfire “in the middle of the night, but I wasn’t sure it really happened because I had the TV on. I’m kind of frightened now.”
A resident of the condominium and town home development, Hodgkin said she thinks her grandchildren know the woman’s son. “I hope she’s OK.”
Police said the woman was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Police said the suspect fled in a 2011 red Ford Taurus with Illinois license number Z558610. He may have access to a white Buick, Illinois license number Y754993. Police described him as black, age 34, 6 feet, 223 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, and possibly accompanied by his 8-year-old son.
“Yeah, I was surprised,” said Tracey Smith, a resident who had just walked past the shooting scene. “It’s always shocking when something happens close by you.”
A resident from down the street, who identified herself as Miss Thomas, said the neighborhood had “been pretty quiet” before Thursday’s shooting.
“Things have happened through the years,” she said. “It’s happened a few times, but not bad, not like I feel like I have to move out now.”
Sitting on his front porch a couple of blocks from the shooting scene, Henry Woods said he was surprised, but “every place changes, you know.” Still, Woods said he feels safe and believes police are providing adequate protection to residents.
