A man who went into a pool at a condominium complex in Lansing to help his struggling grandson died Wednesday afternoon, , Lansing police said.

Reginald Holiday, 61, a resident of the complex in the 3200 block of North Manor Drive, died at 1:40 p.m. at Franciscan Healthcare in Munster, Ind., according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office. His 10-year-old grandson was also taken to a local hospital, and police said he was stable.

The Lake County coroner’s office said Wednesday night that its determination on Holiday’s manner of death was pending.

According to police, who were called to the scene about 1 p.m., Holiday went into the pool to help his grandson, who “was struggling.” Holiday “could not swim and had difficulty in the water as well,” police said in a statement.

A bystander was able to help the child to safety. The grandfather was eventually pulled from the pool by emergency personnel, police said.

“This is just a horrible and unfortunate accident and our condolences go out to the family,” Lansing police said in a statement.
