Magician, comedian and author Penn Jillette will sign books in La Grange telling how he made more than 100 pounds from his 6-foot, 6-inch frame disappear.
Jillette, the taller half of the comedy magic tem of Penn & Teller, will meet fans and sign the diet book he authored “Presto!: How I made 100 pounds Disappear and other Magical Tales” at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at Anderson’s Bookshop, 26 S. La Grange Rd., La Grange.
Losing weight wasn’t as easy as waving a magic wand. Jillette weighed in at 330 pounds, was nearing 60 years old, and had high blood pressure when he met a former NASA scientist Ray Cronise, who advised a plan for quick loss. Jillette ate only potatoes. They could be prepared mashed, boiled or any other way, but they could not have any toppings or additions of any kind.
“I know it’s very interesting. It’s a potato-based diet,” said Jordan Arias, assistant manager at Anderson’s.
“It’s a funny book. It’s just as snarky as his other books. That’s what the reviewers are saying,” she said.
Anyone wishing to get Jillette’s signature on the book needs to purchase it at Anderson’s, Arias said.
The book delves into Jillette’s entire experience including his doctor’s visits, challenges of changing his eating habits and the benefits of losing weight.
Jillette’s other books include “God No! Signs You May Already be an Atheist and other Magical Tales” and “Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday!: More Magical Tales from the Bestselling Author of God, No!,”. He co-authored “Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends,” and “Penn and Teller’s How to Play with your Food” with his partner in magic, Teller.
