Holding thousands of pigs at a time, modern livestock confinements are designed to store millions of gallons of manure, then apply the waste as fertilizer to nearby farmland. But pollution incidents tied to Illinois hog confinements killed 492,000 fish and impaired 67 miles of streams from 2005 through 2014 — more than any other industry, a Tribune investigation found.
Dozens of hog-related pollution events are mapped and described below. These events have been detailed in a variety of government documents. In some cases the precise location of a confinement or number of hogs it housed could not be determined from public records.
