Illinois native and Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member John Malkovich is in the early stages to star as the patriarch of a Northern California crime family.

The project, “Humboldt,” from Sony TV and Anonymous Content (“True Detective,” “Mr. Robot”) was written by Michael A. Lerner (“Love & Mercy”) and is based on the nonfiction bestseller by Emily Brady, “Humboldt: Life on America’s Marijuana Frontier,” that chronicles her year-long study of a Northern California community built on the production and sales of marijuana.

Deadline reports

the project is aimed for premium cable and streaming platforms. Filming location is yet to be announced.

Malkovich has been busy as of late. He stars in “Deepwater Horizon,” a film based on the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and oil spill, which is due out Sept. 30; and “100 Years: The Movie You Will Never See,” which played at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is “due” out, reportedly, Nov. 18, 2115.
