Robbie Gould says the Bears should have him to kick around for a few more years.

“I want to play as long as they let me play,” Gould, 34, said Monday at his annual celebrity golf tournament. “I’m not even thinking about retiring, because I think I have a lot of time left to play. When that time comes, I’ll know; someone else will come tell me it’s time.”

Gould is now the longest-tenured Bear and the third-longest tenured Chicago athlete, with the exodus of veteran players recently. Only Blackhawks Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook have played longer in the city.

The rarity of playing for one franchise for an entire career isn’t lost on Gould, who signed with the Bears in 2005.

“The bigger part of it is being able to play in one city, for one team in my entire career is something that usually doesn’t get accomplished,” Gould said at the Medinah Country Club. “To me, to be in one city with the fans’ support, with the support of the community and things outside of football, that makes it worth it.”

Gould knows that he has an important role because of his long tenure in the city, which is why events such as the golf invitational that benefits Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago are special to him.

“Every athlete is given a platform, and it’s how you use it,” Gould said. “Raising almost a million dollars and seeing 36 groups and more people wanting in, figuring out how we’re going to manage that next year is a great problem to have at an event like this.”

Monday’s tournament was also one last chance for Gould to enjoy the offseason before the Bears head to Bourbonnais for training camp next week.

“Not yet, but I’m excited,” Gould said when asked if he was ready for camp. “I’ve never been this excited heading into a football season before. … It’s going to be an exciting year as a Bears player because we’re going into it with a lot of hopes to have a really good year.”
