The Event: The name may have changed but the mission behind it has only gotten stronger for Forefront, formerly Donors Forum. More than 700 grant-makers, non-profit organizations, advisors and even world-renowned musician, Yo-Yo Ma, turned out for its 42nd annual luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Chicago on June 8 to discuss the future of giving and honor Forefront’s board chairman, Donald A. Cooke of Lake Forest.
The only regional association in the country for philanthropic organizations, Forefront’s members number 1,200 across 26 issue areas. The aim of Forefront is to provide education, advocacy and to attract investment for philanthrophic organizations.
Cause Célebre: “I want people to get how important this work that we’re doing at Forefront is, particularly now with what’s going on with our state budget,” said Eric Weinheimer of River Forest, CEO. Weinheimer is quick to point out that Forefront is not a grant maker. Rather, it is a membership association for non-profits offering access to Forefront’s educational programs, networks and research.

“A full suite of educational programs and networking opportunities with foundation grantors and thought leaders,” clarified Becca Stimson of Wilmette, VP development and communications
“These days,” explained Stimson, “The government budget is not there, the dollars are not there, so many non-profits are considering mergers and thinking about how can they make strategic partnerships. Forefront is leading the effort for the entire Midwest.”
That effort is a sustainability initiative because, although it is second in the country for the total amount of non-profits, Illinois is rated only 27th in generosity.
“We’re going to have to talk about ways to partner, to keep the doors open and provide strategic services to a vulnerable and disadvantaged population,” said Stimpson.
Bottom Line: The event raised $250,000 towards Forefront’s mission to create healthier, more vibrant communities throughout Illinois. More at https://myforefront.org.
