As Buffalo Grove police investigate the possible drug overdose of a woman, officers are searching to find if others were involved in the incident.

Colleen Kovach, 32, of the first block of Stonegate Road, died July 9 after being at a friend’s house in the 400 block of Raphael Avenue, according to a report from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Buffalo Grove police Lt. Tom Nugent said emergency responders administered Naloxone, an antidote many police and firefighters in Lake County carry to try and reverse the effects of an overdose from heroin, prescription painkillers and other opioids, on Kovach when they arrived on scene at the residence.

They gave her two doses of the antidote, but it didn’t work, he said. Kovach was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, Nugent said.

“They assumed it was a drug overdose based on what was in her system and the environment around her,” he said. “But it’s difficult to say without the toxicology report.”

Authorities haven’t determined an official cause of death since results from the toxicology report are pending, a spokesperson with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

When responders arrived at the residence, they found empty prescription pill bottles and other bottles with pills still inside it, Nugent said. A “young man,” who authorities said lives with his parents, also was alone in the house when responders arrived.

Nugent said the man has a record with his department, although officers have not arrested or charged him for anything related to Kovach’s death.

Nugent said police are looking for others who may have been involved.

“We’re trying to find out if anyone else might be culpable of supplying her with something.”

Kovach’s father, Ronald Hackett, said his family did not want to comment.

“We’re still grieving over the loss,” he said.
