A passenger in a stolen van was hurt after it crashed in the Lawndale neighborhood Sunday evening while speeding away from Chicago police officers.

About 11:40 p.m., police officers noticed a 2002 Dodge van run a stop sign in the 3600 block of West Roosevelt Road, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

The officers learned that the van was stolen and turned on their squad car’s emergency lights. The Dodge stopped for a moment before taking off, and the officers ended the pursuit after the van fled, Zala said.

Shortly afterward, about a mile away, the Dodge crashed into two parked cars near Ogden and St. Louis avenues, Zala said.

A male passenger in the van was thrown out of the vehicle. The male, whose exact age was not available, was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, Zala said.

The other people inside the van ran away after the crash. No one was immediately in custody.
