Searching for bargains, and enjoying some summer fun while doing so, is part of what makes the annual Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce Sidewalk Sale fun, according to Chamber Executive Director Terry Dason.
The 2016 sidewalk sale is set for July 15 and 16, and has a roster of more than 130 vendors offering goods of all kinds at special prices, she said. It runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and takes place rain or shine, according to information from the Chamber of Commerce.
During the sale, vendors will line streets in three Winnetka business districts – Hubbard Woods, East Elm Street and West Elm Street on either side of Green Bay Road – and in the Northfield business district on Happ Road, she said.
“This is a wonderful event for the businesses that take part,” Dason said. “Many of them have said that it makes their year.”
Patrons come not only from Winnetka and Northfield, but from Glencoe, Kenilworth and other North Shore communities, she said.
All of the districts get visitor traffic, but the Hubbard Woods section of the sale “is really packed every year,” Dason said.
Another highlight of the sidewalk sale is the “Let Loose on Lincoln” block party that runs between 3 p.m. and 10:30 p. m. on June 16, Dason said. Held on Lincoln Avenue south of Elm Street, the event features food trucks, craft beers and wine, and music, including headliners the Chicago Catz pop and funk orchestra, she said. Attendance is free, but the Chamber suggests a $5 donation, she said.
“It’s very much like a street fair held in Chicago,” Dason said. “We’ve found that people who move to Winnetka from the city like that energy and sense of fun.”
