Lake Bluff village trustees at their June 27 meeting approved plans for a private tram that would descend from the bluff on the 600 block of Lansdowne Lane down to the beach.

Homeowners Ed and Margaret Fiorentino applied to the village on May 31. On June 27, village trustees approved a special use permit.

Construction of trams on the bluff are relatively rare, with only two installed since 1999, according to documents filed with the village by CNM Development of Northbrook on behalf of the Fiorentinos.

“They do not (get requested often),” said Drew Irvin, village administrator.

According to a study submitted by Footprint Engineering, the tram line would be 150 feet down a hill with slope of no more than 35 degrees. The track would weigh 130 pounds per 10-foot section and the tram itself would weigh 300 pounds. The tram could hold up 860 pounds.

Village code requires the tram be no more than 6 feet in width.
