A Highland man was killed Friday night when he drove his motorcycle into the side of an Indiana State Police car.

The victim, identified as Michael M. Damore, 28, by Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris, was westbound on Interstate 90 at about 9:30 p.m. when he struck the front passenger door of a marked state squad car making a U-turn just west of the Portage Toll Plaza, a state police news release said.

Trooper Jathan Rose, who was driving the squad that was struck, did CPR on Damore until Portage emergency medical personnel could transport Damore to Portage Community Hospital, where he later died, the release said.

Damore was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but an initial investigation shows Damore’s driver’s license was suspended and his motorcycle was not registered, the release said.

An autopsy and toxicology screening will be performed Sunday, Harris said. Toxicology results will take six to eight weeks to come back.

Westbound lanes of I-90 were closed from 10:30 p.m. Friday until 2:25 a.m. Saturday so investigators could reconstruction the crash, the release said.
