I’ve written about Varsity, one of my favorite Chicago bands, multiple times at RedEye, most recently premiering the band’s excellent single “Cult of Personality,” so they shouldn’t be news to you. But for some reason I haven’t mentioned Pool Holograph, the great indie rock group that features Varsity’s Jake and Paul Stolz. That’s changing today because RedEye is exclusively premiering the band’s latest song, “Lone Star,” with its b-side, “Perennial.”
“Lone Star” is unequivocally the best song Pool Holograph has released so far. In fact, it’s one of the best Chicago indie rock songs of the year. It’s got the epic, sweeping, guitar-based grandeur of something you’d hear from Cymbals Eat Guitars or if Luna were fronted by Paul Westerberg—an insane compliment in my book. “Perennial,” a home-recorded demo, is great too.
Here’s a statement from the band on the release: “‘Lone Star’ tells a warped, fanatical folk tale of a star that fell to the middle of a rural town, leaving a deep quarry. It was written in pieces over the course of Winter 2016, creating a collage-esque structure and a fixation on a starry-eyed perspective present throughout the EP. The single is backed with a home demo of a new song, ‘Perennial.'”
