Chicago-born, Second City alumnus Matt Walsh discussed his formative years during an interview with GQ that was posted on Wednesday.

The comedy star talked about his interpretation of his home city, “the Machine world of Chicago, which is, ‘I can’t help you unless you know a guy,'” something that influenced the portrayal of his character, Mike McLintock, on the HBO series “Veep.”

Walsh got nostalgic about the ’90s, when he began to build his career in improv, which was considered an outsider art with few female leads back then in Chicago. “ImprovOlympic, Second City are some of the most tolerant, accepting people,” said Walsh.

The actor, who had a role in “Ted,” will appear in “Ghostbusters,” which comes out July 15. “Veep” airs at 9:30 p.m. Sundays on HBO.
