A couple dozen people left Fort Sheridan Post Cemetery damp but satisfied on May 27 after placing about1,400 flags on the graves of veterans.
Members of American Legion Post 264, Boy Scout Troop 48 and a few petty officers from Great Lakes Naval Station took part in the annual activity, said George Kouba, a past post commander who helped organize the flag placement.
“We got rained on a bit,” Kouba said. “We all dried out.”
It was a busy weekend for Post 264. On Saturday morning post members placed flags on the graves of veterans at Lake Forest Cemetery and St. Mary’s Cemetery.
On Memorial Day, the post held ceremonies at all three cemeteries and at Market Square. On May 31, they returned to the cemeteries to retrieve the flags.
