Some baseball truisms will never die: Managers are hired to be fired.

If your bullpen stinks and/or your team is allergic to clutch hitting, your manager will look like a clown.

OK, made that last one up. But oh how it applies to these White Sox, who have been making Robin Ventura look as if he should be patrolling the dugout in giant, floppy shoes and a big red nose.

I don’t blame Ventura for sticking with David Robertson on Saturday night when things went sideways in Kansas City. If Robertson either fields Whit Merrifield’s comebacker or lets it pass without a deflection, the game likely ends with a double play. The next batter, Lorenzo Cain, beat out a double-play grounder.

The Royals were not tattooing the ball. Robertson was not that bad. And later in the inning, we witnessed the alternative: Tommy Kahnle lobbed an unintentional stink bomb on an intentional walk. (Nate Jones was deemed unavailable because he and his reconstructed elbow had gotten loose earlier in the game.)

Fast-forward to Monday’s horror show and a manager’s decision that is borderline indefensible.

With runners at first and second and a mentally fragile Matt Harvey on the ropes, Ventura surrendered an out. With his No. 3 hitter, Melky Cabrera. To set up a righty vs. righty confrontation between Harvey and Todd Frazier. With a hitter just up from the minors to follow.

Cabrera laid down a perfect sacrifice and the Sox still got nothing.

Even if Frazier hits a sacrifice fly, the Sox likely score a lone run. And Ventura expects that to hold up on the road, where the Mets get an extra frame? Did he learn nothing from the catastrophe in Kansas City?

Ventura bailed out Harvey. The struggling ace said as much, acknowledging that after he allowed Adam Eaton and Jose Abreu to reach to start the seventh, “you kind of think about the worst at that point. Negative thoughts creep in your head.”

Things can’t get any more negative for the Sox, who must be the most down-in-the-dumps over-.500 team in big-league history.

Either this team needs a jolt — George Steinbrenner would have fired and re-hired Ventura three times by now — or some of its top-paid talent need to stop making the manager look like he should be juggling bowling pins.
