In words paraphrased from a song by the Beach Boys, it was a time for tears, a time for joy, a time to treasure through the years. It was graduation day at Lyons Township High School.
With freshman year jitters, homecomings, AP classes, games, meets and finals in the rear view mirror, the class of 2016 was ready to step into the future.
About 970 students received diplomas at the event held Sunday at the north campus in La Grange, where family, friends, teachers and other staff were on hand to offer good wishes and applaud their achievements.
The class of 2016’s valedictorian is Diana Kafkes of Western Springs. The salutatorian is Emily Pender, also of Western Springs.
Thomas Cushing, president of Lyons Township High School District 204 Board, and Superintendent Timothy Kilrea, spoke at the ceremony.
The district notes that 96 percent of the graduating class plans to attend college. The top five schools that most graduates of the class of 2016 will attend are College of DuPage, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University, Indiana University and Marquette University.
