With warm temperatures finally arriving in the Southland area, Quinn Reynolds said he was happy to get outside his family’s home to hit a nature trail in Oak Lawn.

“I like … being outside when it’s nice out,” beamed Quinn, 6, of Oak Lawn.

Quinn joined his younger brother, Dillon, 4, and his mother, Colleen, as well as about 50 others for the first annual Family Bike Ride earlier this month at Wolfe Wildlife Refuge Park, 109th Street and Laramie Avenue.

The event, sponsored by the Oak Lawn Park District, was held in honor of National Bike Month and Kids to Parks Day.

“I’m really happy with the turnout we had here today,” said David MacDonald, recreation supervisor for the park district and organizer of the biking event. “We were able to bring a lot of families outside together.”

Aside from riding on a one mile trail, the event included bike rodeo activities and biking tips from police officers Katie Gollogly and Brian Carson. Advocate Children’s Hospital representative also gave a presentation on bike safety and injury prevention.

Alaina Roche, of Oak Lawn said the event was perfect for children like her two sons, Isaac, 8, and Sebastian, 7, who were just learning to ride bikes.

“We are always looking to get outdoors,” Roche said. “My sons recently started really loving to ride their bikes so this is really a wonderful event.”
