Instead of teens, adults will get their hands dirty in clay in an art course at Marist High School.

The school is offering a ceramics class for adults May 31 through June 28 — the only adult course scheduled at the high school this summer.

Marist High School art instructor Brian Keane said he decided open up his class to adults as a way to reach out to the community.

“I like the change of pace after working all school year with young people,” said Keane, who has taught teen students painting and ceramics at the school for more than 18 years. “It also allows us to engage our community in a different way.”

Last summer, Keane started teaching the class to adults at Marist, 4200 W 115th St., Chicago.

The course allows students to work with hand-built ceramics, both vessel and sculptural form, with some access to a potter’s wheel – a machine used in the shaping of round ceramic ware. The wheel also may be used to trim excess from dried ware and to apply incised decoration or color.

The course is opened to all levels of ceramics makers, from beginners to experts, however, use of the potter’s wheel is only recommended for experts who have previous experience working with the wheel, according to Keane.

“Last summer we had a wide range of skill levels and I expect the same this summer,” Keane said. “Adults can benefit from this course by having the opportunity to build projects using creativity and imagination.”

The class will make a variety of items throughout the summer, including, mugs, plates, bowls and planters.

“It is really all about the fun laid back atmosphere and the opportunity to make want you like,” Keane said.

The class fee is $135, which includes clay, access to sculpting necessary tools and other materials.
