Guitars weren’t gently weeping at Lyons Township High School recently. They were rejoicing.

The strains of music were heard at the annual recital performed by about 50 students who took guitar instruction at the school during the past year. It was a happy event as students got to show their family and friends how their skills had improved.

Students in the freshman through senior classes participated in the recital held recently on three consecutive performances May 19 at the district’s north campus in La Grange.

The recital is a culmination of one semester of guitar instruction. The songs played were mostly pop and rock songs, said music teacher Connie Lyda.

Students, from novices to more experienced players, took their turns in the spotlight.

“Some students are true beginners, and others have had previous training or are self-taught,” Lyda said.

Knowing as they take classes that they can perform on a stage is motivational for the students.

“Recital is important because it stretches the students to work for a goal,” Lyda said.

“It develops character because performing in public on a musical instrument takes guts,” she said.

The performance also enables students to take pride in what they’ve achieved.

“It is important for the students to feel a sense of accomplishment — putting their work on stage in a beautiful auditorium,” Lyda said.

Parents and family members also look forward to supporting their children.

“The parents are very proud of their student,” said Lyda. “The recital gives parents a platform to cheer on their child and to watch their child be courageous in public.”

Lyda said about 100 students took guitar during the past year.

“It’s taught in a class, like on huge group lesson,” she said.
