The Elmwood Park Educational Foundation recently donated funds to support the robotics program at Elm Middle School.
“Thank you for all your hard work,” school board President Mary Bruscato said. “I know how difficult it can be to raise money, and you guys do a fantastic job. And we appreciate it.”
A check for $2,297.93 was presented last week during the Community School District 401 School Board meeting at Elmwood Park High School.
The same night the check was awarded, the school board recognized the achievements of Elmwood Park High School’s NASA Ames Space Settlement contest winners. The school team’s settlement, Alpha Eternum, was recognized internationally for a third prize in the Grade 12 category.
This annual contest, co-operated by NASA Ames Research Center, San Jose State University, and the National Space Society, has students submit plans for permanent orbital settlements and activities leading up to settlement (such as space hotels), economic and social issues and more.
The foundation also presented checks to graduating seniors at the school district’s honors breakfast at Elmcrest Banquets By Biancalana on Friday morning. In the past, the foundation has paid for technology tools such as iPads for the school district’s elementary schools.
“The organization has been around for a little more than five years now,” said Jeff Bilotti, the foundation’s vice chairmen. “We met monthly during the school year, and what we do is have events to raise funds to support students throughout the community.”
Typically, the foundation tries to support technology-based educational programs, but Margie Guatheir, a member of the foundation’s board, said it also seeks input from school officials on what would be helpful to them.
The foundation’s next fundraising event is scheduled for Oct. 8.
