Attendees of the Citizen’s Fire Academy on May 19 got to try out air tanks, a thermal imaging camera and attempt an obstacle course.

The program was started by the Lake Forest Fire Department in 2014, said Battalion Chief Kevin Cronin.

“I think their eyes are opened to a lot of what we do and the training that’s involved between medical and fires,” Cronin said. “What takes up most of our time is our training.”

During the six sessions, participants get to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in a barrel, go up in a ladder truck’s basket, don firefighter gear and learn about topics like extricating people trapped in an automobile and how to pull a hose.
