Charles Thomas Hayes looks forward to the CLC Gospel Choir being “one small part of an important community and college event,” the annual College of Lake County Salute to Gospel Music set for May 21 at Waukegan High School.
The Gospel Choir, which Hayes directs, will perform with guest artist Brian Courtney Wilson, a Grammy award nominee for best gospel performance song, “Worth Fighting For,” and a winner of the Dove Award for traditional gospel album of the year. “Each year we sing with professional artists, and it can be a little nerve-wracking,” Hayes said. “But the choir rises to the occasion.”
Hayes said the event’s mission is to bring local groups and professionals to perform as well as recognize the achievements of those who have made important contributions to the community. JoHaan Wilson Cotton, who works for CLC and will help emcee the event, said the Salute to Gospel Music began in the 1980s as a way to bring more African-Americans into the College of Lake County community. Today it attracts up to 1,800 attendees who hear student leaders talk about their challenges and career paths before listening to and watching performances.
“During a pre-show student success reception, current students are honored for their academic achievement and mix with potential new students,” she said, adding professionals share information about scholarships and careers. This year, the Rev. Terry Atwater, pastor at the North Shore Church of Christ in Waukegan, will receive the 2016 Harambee Award of Excellence.
“Minister Atwater is just one of the more influential persons we have collaborated with over the years,” Cotton said. “He’s allowed us to place information regarding courses and programs in the church. He also developed a strong youth program at the church.” He has a master’s degree in business administration.
Cotton said the event gives students and the public a chance to hear renowned African-American musicians, including Brian Courtney Wilson, and Paul Porter, lead vocalist and songwriter for The Christianaires. Porter has won a Grammy and was elected to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Other performers at the event include North Shore Baptist Minister’s Alliance Community Choir and RHEMA Dance Ministry. Cotton said she hopes those who come will find the evening “welcoming, inspiring and uplifting.”
