player ready...It’s hard to believe the school year is coming to a close and summer vacation is around the corner. We are fortunate to live in a community where many of our schools have strong parent-teacher organizations to help support our students, and provide fundraising opportunities for acquiring new and improved equipment and technology.
There are a few upcoming events where you can help make a difference for our schools and kids.
Daniel Wright Junior High School in Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 is looking to improve its fitness center, which is filled with old and broken down equipment. To help with the improvement, District 103 schools, including Sprague, Half Day and Daniel Wright, are holding a raffle with an exciting twist.
The school that sells the most raffle tickets will receive a visit from the Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould! The raffle prizes include tickets to a Chicago Bears game, Bulls game and Cubs game all set to be drawn on May 21 during “Run For D103”, the District 103 PTO’s annual 5K fundraiser. More information about the raffle can be found at www.funford103.org/raffle.
If you would like to participate in the sixth annual “Run For D103” 5K run/walk, it starts at 8 a.m. May 21 at Daniel Wright, 1370 N. Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. This fun, family event hosted 780 runners and walkers last year. Participants will receive a t-shirt and post-race bagels, bananas, Gatorade and water. The top three finishers in various age groups also will receive awards.
By supporting the run, the schools can improve learning tools, including state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment, STEM technology and music room updates. For registration information, go to www.runford103.org.
The Woodlawn Middle School PTO in Kildeer Countryside School District 96 is hosting a fundraiser at Leider Greenhouse, 1625 Leider Lane, Buffalo Grove, through May 27.
For every Leider Greenhouse gift certificate purchased for $25 or $50, 25 percent of the profit will be given back to Woodlawn to spend for school supplies and programs. The certificates are great to use as gifts or to spend on your own garden. To purchase certificates, contact Susie White at [email protected] or call 773-383-1850.
The PTO at Aptakisic-Tripp School District 102 is hosting a “Tastefully Simple” fundraiser through May 31. Visit the D102 PTO host linkto shop online for delicious products that help create quick and easy meals. The district will receive a 15 percent cash donation of sales, plus product to use for future fundraisers. For information, contact Shirley Combes at [email protected] or call Janine Black at 847-949-9520.
District 102 also has compiled a cookbook with favorite recipes from district parents and teachers. The books cost $12 each and proceeds benefit District 102 cultural arts and technology. For information, contact Jill Seltzer at [email protected], Renee Alberico at [email protected] or Mara Lewis at [email protected].
It’s important to remember that even though school almost is out for summer, parent volunteers from our school districts still are working hard all year to provide quality programs to everyone in our community. One of the most popular parent volunteer groups around is the Community Parent Network, which includes volunteers from school districts 96, 102 and 103, as well as members of the Stevenson High School Patriot Parent Association and liaisons from districts 73, 76, 79 and start-up districts.
This invaluable group offers education in parenting and covers such tough topics as drug and alcohol awareness through speaker events, small group meetings and cyber/digital space. The next community event is the “Stand Strong Monthly Meeting,” which lasts from 7 to 9 p.m. June 9 at Lincolnshire Village Hall, 1 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire. For information about the network or how to participate, visit www.communityparentnetwork.org
