Haymarket Pub & Brewery’s The Defender stout defended its crown Friday night, scoring its second consecutive gold medal at the World Beer Cup in Philadelphia in an awards ceremony that saw nine Chicago-area breweries take home awards.
The Defender, a hop forward stout, bested 50 other entries in the American-Style Stout category. It also won golds at the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival in 2014. (World Beer Cup awards are handed out every two years.)
Gold medals also went to Chicago’s Rock Bottom brewpub in the American-Belgo-Style Ale category for its Snowcat White India pale ale and Three Floyds Brewing Co., of Munster, Ind., for Blot Out the Sun stout in the American-Style Imperial Stout category.
Bronze medals went to Revolution Brewing’s brewpub in the Other Strong Beer category for Winter Woman, an imperial brown ale; Two Brothers Brewing Co., in Warrenville, in Belgian- and French-Style Ale for Domaine DuPage, a biere de garde; Crystal Lake Brewing Co., in Crystal Lake, for Beach Blonde in the Muenchner-Style Helles category; and Argus Brewery in the American-Style Amber Lager category for its Holsteiner, an Oktoberfest.
